Numerical HRAC Classification for Herbicides

The Austrian Federal Office for Food Safety (BAES) will implement the new numerical HRAC classification!

The Austrian Federal Office for Food Safety (BAES) will implement the new numerical HRAC classification for all plant protection product approvals issued from February 1st, 2024, onwards. The ‘Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC)‘ has announced a significant modification to its categorization system, moving from a letter-based approach to a numerical one aligned with the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA). This modification intends to simplify the identification of herbicide modes of action and improve resistance management techniques throughout Europe.

Background

In Europe, pesticides (IRAC), fungicides (FRAC), and herbicides (HRAC) are categorized using the relevant Resistance Action Committee (RAC) system. Previously, active ingredients in plant protection products were assigned an alphanumeric HRAC code.

The New Harmonized System

The new system employs a purely numerical approach, aligning with the existing WSSA classification used in the United States and other regions. This harmonization streamlines communication and simplifies identification of compatible weed control solutions for farmers and industry professionals. Alongside the classification shift, individual active ingredient allocations within the system will also be updated. This ensures accurate reflection of each herbicide’s unique mechanism of action and facilitates informed resistance management strategies.

Weed control

Preventing weeds from developing resistance is the purpose behind the HRAC categorization system. Farmers are urged to vary their weed management strategies and refrain from overusing treatments that have the same mode of action clearly stated on the labels of plant protection goods. This helps preserve the long-term effectiveness of herbicides and lessens the selection pressure on weed populations.

The adoption of the numerical HRAC classification system represents a significant step forward in promoting responsible herbicide use and mitigating resistance risks,” “This change will be particularly beneficial for European farmers, simplifying their access to accurate information and fostering sustainable weed control practices.”

Key Highlights:

  • In Europe, the HRAC categorization system is converted to a numerical representation.
  • Identification of herbicide mechanisms of action is made easier by harmonization with WSSA.
  • An updated method encourages resistance management and prudent pesticide usage.
  • Change taking effect in Austria on February 1st, 2024.
