India Proposes Nationwide Ban on Paraquat Dichloride, one of the world’s most contentious herbicides. The move follows similar regulatory steps in numerous countries, including Australia, and shows growing global concern about the active substance’s potential hazards to human health.
On January 14, 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, through the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, appointed an Expert Committee to assess the continuing use of Paraquat Dichloride in India. The Committee delivered its report to the Central Government on June 12, 2026, following a thorough scientific review.
Following consultations with the Registration Committee established by the Insecticides Act of 1968, the government examined the available scientific information, submitted research, and safety concerns. The Registration Committee stated that Paraquat Dichloride has previously been prohibited or severely restricted in over 70 countries due to its serious health hazards.
The Registration Committee suggested that Paraquat Dichloride be completely prohibited from being manufactured, imported, transported, distributed, sold, or used in India. As a result, the Central Government has released the Draft Banning of Paraquat Dichloride Order, 2026, requesting public comments and objections for 30 days before releasing the final notification.
Key Provisions of the Draft Order : India Proposes Nationwide Ban on Paraquat Dichloride
- Paraquat Dichloride is completely prohibited from being imported, manufactured, sold, transported, distributed, or used.
- All registration certificates issued under the 1968 Insecticides Act will be cancelled and recalled.
- Failure to return registration certificates within three months may result in regulatory action.
- State governments will implement and enforce the ban after it is published in the Official Gazette. Industry Impact
The planned ban is one of India’s most significant pesticide regulation choices in recent years, and it accords with the rising global drive to phase out very toxic pesticides. Companies who manufacture, import, distribute, or use Paraquat Dichloride should closely watch the draft notification’s progress and examine its possible impact on product portfolios, registrations, and supply chains.
