The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has announced amended timetables for the final judgments on three major chemical reconsiderations, postponing two until 2026.
Anticoagulant Rodenticides Decision Expected by Year’s End
APVMA updates timelines for key chemical reconsideration decisions on anticoagulant rodenticides is now scheduled for release before the end of the year. This judgment, which involves a review of eight active components, was originally scheduled for mid-October. “We have completed all assessments of the 8 active ingredients captured by the review and are now finalising the appropriate regulatory response to those assessments.”
Paraquat and Diquat Decisions Deferred to Mid-2026
The Final APVMA updates timelines for key chemical reconsideration Decisions on paraquat and diquat will now be released in mid-2026, rather than before the end of this year. This delay follows the submission of an updated study by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on November 13, 2025. The new US EPA analysis indicated that there is more ambiguity about the possibility for paraquat to volatilise than previously thought.
The APVMA is reviewing its own estimates of paraquat’s volatility and addressing issues expressed in the latest U.S. EPA analysis. This longer deadline is required to fully analyze the U.S. EPA’s revised study and make any necessary changes to the APVMA’s risk assessment.
