Glyphosate: European Commission extends authorisation by one year

Glyphosate has been the most commonly used herbicide in the EU and around the world for several decades.
• In order to extend the approval period for the active substance glyphosate, the European Commission amended regulation No. 540/2011 on 2 December 2022.
• To assess renewal of approval procedure for glyphosate, EU created an ‘assessment group on Glyphosate’ involving four member states i.e., France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Sweden on 10 May 2019.
• EFSA plans to publish its peer review conclusions by July 2023.
• Following the legal obligation laid down in Article 17 of Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009, the current amended version covers extension of the approval of glyphosate until 15 December 2023.
