The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released a New HSE Guidance on pesticide residue Extrapolation in food and agricultural commodities. The guidance, which will come into force on January 1, 2024, replaces the previous version of the document, SANCO 7525/VI/95 Rev. 10.3.
The new guidance provides more detailed information on the data requirements for residue trials, the comparability of residue trials, and the extrapolation of residue data for products of plant and animal origin. It also includes a new section on the setting of maximum residue levels (MRLs).
The guidance is intended to help applicants for the registration of plant protection products (PPPs) and for the setting of MRLs in Great Britain (GB). It is also relevant to those responsible for regulating such substances and commodities.
The HSE has said that the new guidance is intended to “ensure that the safety of consumers is protected and that the use of PPPs is sustainable”.
Here are some key points to note about the New HSE Guidance on Pesticide Residue Extrapolation in Food :
- It applies to all PPPs that are registered or used in GB.
- It sets out the technical requirements for residue trials, including the location of trials, the number of trials required, and the types of data that must be collected.
- It provides guidance on the comparability of residue trials and how to deal with deviations from Good Agricultural Practice (GAP).
- It describes the methods that can be used to extrapolate residue data for products of plant and animal origin.
- It includes a new section on the setting of MRLs.
The new guidance is a significant update to the previous version and is essential reading for anyone involved in the registration or use of PPPs in GB.
