The European Union (EU) and the Republic of Moldova formally opened association discussions (accession negotiations), marking a historic milestone. This occasion signifies a huge step forward for Moldova’s goal to join the European union.
The decision comes after the Negotiating Framework was recently approved and the European Council gave its support in December 2023.
The first Security and Defence Partnership between Moldova and the EU was signed on 21 May 2024. On June 25, 2024, the first Intergovernmental Conference at the ministerial level was place, confirming the mutual commitment.
The EU acknowledged Moldova’s ongoing challenges related to the war in Ukraine and reaffirmed its unwavering support. Citing the recently negotiated Security and Defence Partnership, the first of its type in EU ties, and the current Association Agreement, it emphasised Moldova’s standing as a close partner.
“Congratulations to Moldova for passing a milestone on its EU accession path,” said Hadja Lahbib, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Belgium, who led the EU delegation. “The swiftness of these negotiations reflects Moldova’s dedication to fulfilling EU reforms.”
The EU Commission will continue evaluating Moldova’s readiness in particular areas even after formal discussions begin. Moldova will be required to respect democracy, human rights, and the rule of law as a prospective member state of the European Union
The move marks the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the EU and Moldova, setting the stage for a more secure and connected future.
